The following pages of material were submitted by the Cresson Historical
Association of Cresson, Pa. My thanks to Etta Albright and
Mick Bradley for making this material available.
The material consists of the following:
* 16 postcard images of the sanatorium buildings.
* 1 short summary of the sanatorium history
* 34 pages of photos from a photo album.
The origin of the photo album is not clear. But we do know certain facts based on the hand
written notes which accompany the photos. The person who took most of the photos and put the album together was
a Miss Grow (first name unknown). The photos were taken between 1916 and 1921. Miss Grow was evidently a
patient nurse, that is a TB patient who, after being cured, stayed on to become a nurse. In one photo she
is attending the employee's picnic, clearly showing she was an employee of the sanatorium. Her birthday was November
3rd, but we don't know the year.
Several pages of photos near the beginning are marked "Dedication Day Nov. 2, 1917"
which marked the dedication of Grace Chapel. Mrs. Thaw, who donated generously
to the building of the chapel, attended the dedication ceremony and is shown in several photos.
Miss Grow's album is especially meaningful as most of the people in the photos are identified
by name and whether they are patients, staff or visitors. The album provides a wonderful and detailed
look at her life during these five years at the san. I only wish we knew more about her personal story.
