Robert
Vandenberg of Olympia, Wa. built the cardboard KI-84 “Frank” shown below, an electric R/C version of my C/L model
published in Model Aviation in Sept 2010. Bob added 2 piece functioning flaps linked together with a thin
wire and a battery hatch in the top forward fuselage hinged on the right side. It is about 8 pounds all
up weight. The motor is from Value Hobby and
is comparable to an e-flite power 60. The batteries are 3S
2200 mah x2 in series for a total of 6 S. He plans to upgrade
to 6S 4000 mah, which should get about 5-6 minutes of flight.
He said it
flew really well and handled like a "pussy cat". All
the guys at the club were impressed with the take-off and landing. Notice
that Bob converted the carved balsa cowl to a cardboard ring design, an easier to build design and saves weight.
Bob said it was a challenge to build but a fun project and well worth
the effort. It was displayed in a local hobby shop
for several months in the unpainted state and received a lot of compliments.
Bob now has his eye on the P-51 and the Spad XIII, which he says should be easier having once done the modifications
to R/C. The P-51 is one of his favorites and he is eager to
get a start on it. He said “Thanks” for the new aspect to
this already fun and relaxing hobby.
(Note:
In July 2013 Bob sent me photos of his cardboard P-51 Mustang shown below with the following note: Chuck- these are the pix of the new P-51, my tribute
to the Tuskegee airmen. Maiden flight was this evening and it flies very well.
It is in the Hanger with the KI-84. Thanks, Bob VandenBerg , Olympia , Wa.)
